The European Union should insist that Croatian courts
make evident progress in war crimes trials now that Croatia is preparing itself for talks on becoming an EU member-country, since up to now, such trials before the Croatian courts were ethnically partial and against Serbs, they lacked professionalism and cooperation of the police, the US Human Rights Watch (HRW) said on Monday.
There is a major disproportion in war crimes proceedings against ethnic Serbs and Croatians in Croatia , Human Rights Watch concludes in a study on war crimes trials in Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia-Montenegro, which was presented in Brussels on Monday .
The HRW said that courts in the region were ethnically biased, prosecutors were insufficiently prepared, cooperation with police was inadequate and witness protection was unsuitable.
