The leader of Macedonia's Democratic Union for Integration, Ali Ahmeti, said yesterday that the success of a referendum against giving greater power to the country's Albanian minority would mean civil war.
Ahmeti, speaking to Kosovo daily Bota Sot, said that he hoped the parties from Macedonia's governing coalition would defeat the referendum and prevent such a course of events and the difficult consequences it would have region-wide.
He added that the referendum was not being called against the restructuring of Macedonia's electoral districts but specifically to derail the Ohrid agreement which brought peace after months of ethnic conflict in the country.
The World Macedonian Congress says it has gathered more than the required 150,000 signatures of Macedonian citizens required to force a referendum on the issue.
