Unbelief and shock struck 'Airbus' principle office in Toulose, France after announcement by Serbia’s national carrier 'JAT Airways' about purchase and leasing of planes from American 'Boeing'. Namely, JAT has earlier concluded an agreement with the French manufacturer for purchase of eight planes, Blic Daily writes today.
'At the end of May we were in Belgrade and then no hints were made about such development of this matter. In any case this matter is not finished for us and we never give up', a high 'Airbus' representative said for 'Blic' on condition of anonymity.
JAT concluded a contract with 'Airbus' for purchase of eight planes, type A319 in total value of 400 million Dollars in 1998. So far JAT has paid 23 millions which might not be returned in case of cancellation of the contract.
'Since JAT has an obsolete fleet consisting mainly of 'Boeing' planes, JAT and that American manufacturer expressed readiness to work out together appropriate solution so that JAT gets new planes within the shortest possible time and at the most favorable price', the statement reads. Pilots, engineers and technicians of JAT have appropriate certificates for 'Boeing' planes, so 'the purchase of 'Boeing' planes is economically justified'.
'Airbus' claims to have offered to JAT the most favorable prices and that training of pilots and technicians was not a problem.
'The contract with 'Airbus' is of earlier and we are trying in all possible ways to find a gentleman agreement with the French especially in trying to get back the 23 millions of Dollars', Prlja explains. As far as we understood 'Airbus' has no intention of cancelling the a contract or returning the money.
'It is a large sum of money and some solution has to be found. We would prefer 'Boeing' planes but these negotiations does not mean final giving up 'Airbus', Prlja says.
We have not managed to get the opinion of the Minister for capital investments, Velimir Ilic since he was 'too busy'.
